Background of thesis project
Hydrogen based Fuel cell technology offers a sustainable solution for several Penta segments, but it comes with its own share of challenges. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity from an electrochemical reaction, resulting in water as a by-product. Efficient management of the produced water (liquid form) could be crucial in high power applications.
Each kg of hydrogen produces 9 kg of water/steam. If you consume 100 kg hydrogen/day, 900 kg water/day will be produced and come out through the fuel cell exhaust system. Imagine if that water can be used to improve the performance of the fuel cell.
Description of thesis work
- Get familiar with fuel cell technology
- Chemical analysis of exhaust wastewater to check purity and PH level
- Corrosion test and analysis
- Develop a system for reuse of wastewater from the fuel cell including collection, distribution, spray pattern and heat/cooling/conditioning of the system.
Deliveries include theoretical studies of the wastewater composition and the impact upon the design of a spray water system as well as geometrical consideration for a possible prototype system.
