The department of architecture at Chalmers has a strong profile of sustainability and addresses crucial societal issues relating to the built environment in exploratory and practice-related ways. In the teaching and research at the department, practice-based, artistic and scientific approaches are integrated to investigate the broad aspects of architecture – from building technology, spatial structures and formation to design methodology, transformation of built environments and roles in sustainable development.
Chalmers Architecture is now strengthening and developing research and education in the strategically important area Form and technology. To this end we now announce a professorship in Architecture and Structural Design.
Major responsibilities
The professor in Architecture and Structural Design will conduct research, research education and undergraduate as well as graduate teaching in the area of Form and technology, especially the interaction between architectural form and the technologies of construction. Central is research on architectural design processes supported by structural mechanics and technical systems, and on pedagogy, education and tools that promote cooperation between architects and engineers within academic as well as professional contexts. The job also includes developing an environment for research and education that builds bridges between architecture and the art of engineering.
The professor will be active in Chalmers’ Areas of Advance, especially Area of Advance Built Environment and Area of Advance Material. Among the professor’s duties is also to develop collaborations between universities and industry, both nationally and internationally.

Qualifications
A position at Chalmers as full professor requires scientific expertise on a very high level, at the top of the field from an international perspective. You must have the ability to assume a leading role for research in your field. You must be a skilled educator and accustomed to teaching on different levels. For this reason, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio. You have good leadership and cooperation skills. Since your own research and that of PhD students is primarily funded by external sources, we assume you can successfully apply for external funding. Experience from research and development in industry/the public sector and demonstrated innovation capacity are meritorious. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you must be able to teach in Swedish on graduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
The applicant for the professorship in Architecture and Structural Design shall have:
• a civil engineering degree or corresponding competence,
• a doctoral degree in a subject relating to the area,
• education in pedagogy in higher education or demonstrated corresponding competence (minimum 15 higher education credits),
• demonstrated skills of research in the borderland between architecture/form and supporting structures,
• demonstrated skills of research supervision in the area,
• demonstrated skills of teaching on basic and advanced levels in the area,
• documented ability to develop courses, educational programs, and teaching aids in the area,
• demonstrated good leadership abilities and experience of building knowledge environment in the area,
• demonstrated the ability for collaboration with the surrounding world - nationally and internationally.
