Information about the division
The Division of Product Development (http://www.chalmers.se/ppd/EN/) at the department of Product and Production Development is since a decade well established with internationally recognized and nationally leading research groups with strong networks in both academy and industry. The core competences of the division are machine elements, systems engineering, design theory and methodology, product modeling, product data management, robust design and variation simulation within a context of Sustaiable and Lean Product Development. All research is conducted in cooperation with industry within the Wingquist Laboratory and the Wingquist Laboratory VINN Excellence Centre (http://www.chalmers.se/ppd/wingquist-en).
The Systems Engineering & PLM (SE&PLM) research group within the division has during the last fifteen years been internationally established among the leading groups in the world conducting research on platform based systems development. Within this field the group has adopted a new object oriented development approach that recently has gained significant attention in the scientific community as well as in industry. The approach is well in line with the German initiative "Industry 4.0", which can be regarded as a new paradigm for industrial system development and production. So far the group´s research has resulted in a new development methodology, including a new modelling concept, for platform system development which currently is under validation and implementation in industry. The main challenge now is to continue, consolidate and expand this research and to position the group in the international forefront when this new system development paradigm is established in industry and the scientific community. The new professor will be a key actor in this process.
