Information about the research and the department
The mission of the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is to contribute to a sustainable society; it aims on a built environment which promotes health and wellbeing and quality of life, as well as being resource-and cost-efficient. Research reaches from need-driven basic research to applied research and is organised in seven divisions meeting around a number of key areas; water, energy, buildings, environment and transport infrastructure. Examples of activities in the area of transport infrastructure are new structures and composite materials for bridges, in-depth geotechnical knowledge to prevent landslides and problems with bridge foundations and tunnels, sustainability and energy aspects, the environmental impact of transport infrastructure including noise and vibration. One of the key activities in this area is the cooperation with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration on the E39 Coastal Highway Initiative where more than 10 PhD students work in different projects towards the vision of climate neutral ferry free link along the Norwegian west coast. Other key activities inside Chalmers University of Technology relevant for the open position are for instance SAFER (http://www.chalmers.se/safer/) focusing on vehicle and traffic safety aspects, the Centre of Excellence in Railway Mechanics (http://www.charmec.chalmers.se/) as well as the areas of advance in transport (http://www.chalmers.se/en/areas-of-advance/transport/Pages/default.aspx) and built environment (http://www.chalmers.se/en/areas-of-advance/builtenvironment/Pages/default.aspx).

Major responsibilities
As full professor at Chalmers, you are expected to play a leading role in research and education in your subject area. Duties include performing your own research, teaching on undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels, supervising PhD students and taking part in leadership and administration of both research and other activities. Other important aspects of the position include providing information and communicating about research and current development in the subject area, planning research projects and cooperating within academia and with society at large.?
The chair in urban mobility systems focuses on transport research on a system level including aspects of:
- Transport in a social, economic and ecological context
- Transport infrastructure and its integration in society with special focus on urban planning
- A sustainable green transport infrastructure including new strategies for promoting and implementing e.g. cycling and walking
The applicant is expected to establish and lead a research group working inside these areas in order to reinforce and complement the activities at the department around transport infrastructures. Besides to perform and lead research a successful candidate is expected to develop and teach courses within our educational programmes. One of the department’s missions is to play a leading role in two of the Areas of Advance at Chalmers: Built Environment and Transport. The department expects that the applicant will contribute to and advance our collaboration in these areas.
This includes for instance:
-To actively lead and develop teaching and research at both the departmental and research group levels.
-To teach courses at all levels.
?-To be the main supervisor for doctoral students and also to be prepared to act as examiner.
-To actively conduct and lead research as the leader of one’s own research group.?
-To promote this group as a strong complement to the already ongoing activities at the department.
-To effectively seek external research funding from multiple sources.
-To participate in and promote exchange of knowledge with the international professional community.
-To be a mentor and give younger faculty members support and feedback in teaching, research, research funding and outreach activities.
?-To participate in the leadership of the department and of Chalmers, including beneficial innovation, as well as internal and external committee work.
-To advance interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary cooperation.
-To collaborate with organisations outside of academia – in Sweden an internationally.
Position summary
The position is a full-time permanent employment as full professor to start as soon as possible.
