The department and the division
Research and education in Architecture at Chalmers has a strong profile in sustainability, working with societal challenges in the built environment. The department´s teaching and research in architecture, urbanism and design processes integrate practice-based, artistic and scientific methods to explore the broad aspects of the subject area architecture. This spans from building technology, design approaches, and spatial structures to design methods, transformation of built environments and its role in sustainable development. Our goal is to develop knowledge to support development of the built environment and architectural design based on high scientific and artistic qualities.
The division of Building Design conducts research and education in the field of planning and design of buildings. The division focuses on all aspects and phases of building design starting with users’ needs, over program and design stages as well as studying use and experiences of the built environment. It has a strong position within housing and healthcare but is also active in the areas of sustainable renovation and transformation of buildings.
Planning and design of housing and residential buildings is one of the architects´ core competencies and relates to our everyday life in a profound way – it concerns us all. The subject has a long and strong tradition within the department. The department is also host to the Centre for Housing Architecture, CBA. The center is a platform for knowledge sharing, discussion, development and research. The platform aims at increased collaboration between business and academia. You will be expected to engage and take a leading role in the activities of the center.
