Information about the division and the research
The division of Structural Engineering is one of seven research divisions within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Department has about 180 employees and works with every aspect of construction in the community – houses to live in, roads to travel on, and water to drink – from planning to maintenance, taking into account the environment, energy and economics.
Chalmers has established a professor position in Timber Structures, at the division of Structural Engineering. The division has about 10 faculty members and currently 13 PhD students working with research and education about bridges, buildings and other load-carrying structures in the built environment. The research group on Steel and Timber Structures comprises research and education within steel structures, fibre-reinforced composite sstructures and structures of timber and wood-based products.
The field of research comprises structural design and analysis of timber structures and development of new wood-based products and connections suitable for load-carrying purposes. Central issues include the load-carrying capacity, stability, function and durability of timber structures. The research field includes the entire life-cycle of the structures, from conceptual through detail design, production and construction aspects, to assessment, management and strengthening of existing structures. The research includes development of advanced analysis methods, which together with experiments in the laboratory gives a better understanding of the structural behaviour. Examples of important research challenges are improving the mechanical performance of connections and reinforcement of timber in the weak zones.
We are teaching in undergraduate and master's programmes within engineering for the built environment. Our international master's programme Structural Engineering and Building Technology is one of the most popular at Chalmers and we provide and develop courses within Structural Engineering, in e.g. Structural Systems, Structural Design and Concrete, Steel and Timber structures.
With support from the Swedish timber industry, the research aims to boost the performance of structural timber products and construction and, by doing so, improve the use of timber in construction in both existing and new applications. We welcome applicants from a wide range of research backgrounds within the field of Timber Structures.

You are expected to lead the development of the research and teaching in timber structures in its next phase of its growth and development. You will work both independently and as part of the research team.
Main responibilities of the position include:
- To develop and lead the area of research
- To collaborate with industry and society as well as within academia, in Sweden and internationally
- To apply for and attract research funding and to lead research projects
- To be examiner and supervise PhD students as main supervisor
- To develop and teach in courses on all levels of our education and to supervise degree projects.
