Information about the research area and the department
Polymeric materials constitute today a very important class of materials in our society and the use of these is expected to increase over a foreseeable future. The application areas span over a very wide range, from biology to structural components. The existing and future challenges include promoting extended use of polymers based on renewable resources, development/adaptation of manufacturing or processing techniques for recycled polymers and polymers based on renewable raw materials and tailoring properties of composite systems meeting the demands for lighter materials and functional applications.
The research group Polymeric Materials and Composites, being a part of the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology seeks a Full Professor/Professor in Polymeric Materials and Composites (Engineering Polymers) specializing in Polymer Processing and Properties meeting the challenges given above. The position is a tenure position within an area that is strategically important for Chalmers future development. It will initially be partly supported by Chalmers Area of Advance in Materials Science.
The group Polymeric Materials and Composites is devoted to research and educational activities on sustainable manufacturing and materials. Studies of properties (mechanical and other functional) of materials derived from renewable resources, such as wood, tailored composites and recycled plastics are here in focus and these studies go hand in hand with corresponding adaptation/development of efficient processing routes for such systems.
The details of the departmental research activities may be found at http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mmt/Pages/default.aspx
Major responsibilities
As full professor/professor, you are expected to play a leading role in research and education in your subject area. The successful candidate will conduct and develop activities falling into the educational portfolio of the group, with focus on graduate and postgraduate studies, as well as carry out high quality research, both independently and in cooperation with other researchers within academic and industrial organizations. The applicant is also expected to contribute to the forthcoming strategic development of the discipline as well as to effectively attract resources for realizing the strategic plans. Other important aspects of the position include providing information and communicating about research and current development in the subject area, planning research projects and cooperating within academia and with society at large.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess a PhD degree in Polymer Science and Engineering, or equivalent. The applicant is expected to have substantial research and teaching experience on issues relevant to the area of polymeric materials and composites, especially a deep knowledge based on polymer physics extending towards polymer properties, rheology and processing. The research field has boundaries towards polymer chemistry and solid mechanics. It is important that the competence of the candidate allows for an adequate cooperation across these boundaries.
A position as professor at Chalmers requires scientific expertise on a very high level, and it should be at the top of the field from an international perspective. You must demonstrate the ability to undertake a leading role for research and as a skilled educator accustomed to teaching on different levels. You must also have good leadership and cooperation skills. Since your own research and that of PhD students is primarily funded by external sources, we assume you can successfully apply for external funding. Experience from research and development work in industry and demonstrated innovation capacity are meritorious. The position requires a minimum of 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you are expected to learn Swedish to be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
