You will be responsible for detailed design work on a project, turning concepts into play. Working with the team to understand goals and ideas, you are comfortable exploring and refining those ideas into practical buildable systems. Your role involves bringing your own ideas and hearing everyone else’s, and shepherding them from early prototypes to well tuned shipping gameplay.
You have played lots of games across genres, platforms, and playstyles. You are analytical and can articulate differences and similarities, and are able to boil these findings down to mechanics and systems. That knowledge helps you know when a new idea is paying off and when it should be discarded and refinement of past approaches would be more effective. You can map a desired player feeling into systems to produce it. You have an understanding of what players are motivated by and what it takes for a player to feel rewarded during a play session. You are especially effective at communicating and collaborating with peers, making sure everyone feels like they can contribute to the design. Seeing it all come together for the player makes you happy.
Examples of responsibilities
- Constant interaction with the rest of the team, always be curios and look for new ideas, and turning ideas into tangible designs
- Ideation, design, present and prototype game mechanics and features
- Being the champion of the player experience, working with the team to make sure that the emotional and motivational goals of features are on point
- Living, evocative, visual documentation suitable for detailed analysis with other designers or broad strokes understanding across the entire team
- Working directly together with coders, other design disciplines and research departments to make sure that features and systems are scalable and suited for a live game
- Working directly in the editor building, tuning and fixing game systems and features
We would love if you have
- Passion for and experience with high quality hands-on 3D game building
- Proficiency with the Unreal Engine 4, level building and some blueprint/scripting experience
- Experience from AAA live service and/or F2P games
- Advocacy for the player experience and their creative involvement
- Enjoyment of creative collaboration - eager to design and share with others
- Some familiarity with coding practice, art pipelines and systems design
