Arbetsbeskrivning

The European Spallation Source, ESS, a partnership of European countries, is hiring motivated and inspired people to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in different fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe.

ESS can offer a variety of things, such as passionate and international colleagues, a vibrant melting pot of diversity, and a challenging, exciting and high paced work environment. We value and need expertise, innovative minds and great ways of leading and interacting with people from all over the world.

Come and change the world with us!

ESS is now looking for a Group Leader for Sample Environment to be leading a group placed in the Scientific Activities Division, organised within the Science Directorate. The Scientific Activities Division (SAD) is responsible for sample environment, sample & laboratory services as well as the industrial & academic user office at the ESS. During the ESS construction phase, SAD is building the infrastructure and technical competence to later operate the sample environment systems that will control physical parameters such as temperatures, fields, pressures, (gas) mixtures, humidity during neutron experiments. The Sample Environment Group provides agile scientific support to the ever-changing scientific communities and challenges by its ability to perform neutron experiments with multiple / combined physical parameters.

Job description

Reporting to the Head of the Scientific Activities Division, the Sample Environment Group Leader will lead a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians responsible for the sample environment systems and direct all aspects of the day-to-day operations in the group by not only implementing the corresponding policies, providing short-term operational direction and assign work to the team members but also assisting staff and (external) users in their work. This requires helping the external users and ESS colleagues in defining, scheduling and executing their (neutron) experiments as part of the ESS user programme.

The Sample Environment Group Leader also directs the integration support for sample environment systems and their calibration, maintenance and repair. For ESS' sustainability as a user facility, the Sample Environment Group Leader triggers and oversees the preparation of detailed specifications for new sample environment systems, new technological developments / adjustments to emerging scientific topics, and the supervision of students. Being scientifically rooted, establishing and executing (third-party funded) scientific collaborations is important. An essential aspect of this role is the close collaboration with the various ESS stakeholders especially the teams for designing, constructing and operating the neutron instruments but also the teams for environment, health, safety and quality as well as logistics, facility management, experimental control and engineering support.

Qualifications:

You are required to hold a masters degree in engineering or one of the physical sciences, have extensive experience in working at a research infrastructure or providing similar scientific services at an academic or industrial R&D environment. You should also provide an outstanding track record of successfully executed scientific and methodological projects.

The Sample Environment Group Leader has to have a pro-active way of working and leading a team, the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and a keen interest both in providing scientific support and in sample environment techniques. Preference will be given to candidates with a recognised international profile relevant for neutron scattering investigations as well as hands-on experience in providing user support service. The evaluation will be based on proven leadership ability, together with scientific and technical qualifications.

Your interpersonal and networking skills are excellent and demonstrated by your ability to establish effective relationships and networks inside and outside the organisation. Sharing your expertise as well as continuously developing yourself professionally will be key success factors. The position requires the ability to adapt and cope with changing circumstances. As working in an international environment will challenge your ability to handle cultural diversity, it is important that you have successfully managed this in previous employments. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.

Our work environment is characterised by fast growth, fast pace of work, and an international atmosphere with highly skilled personnel. You must therefore enjoy the diversity of such an environment and have a personality suited for the challenges it presents. Our work environment is exciting and forward thinking and relies heavily on personal initiative.
