Group leaders in experimental medical research

Three five-year positions as group leaders in experimental medical research To promote the generation of new internationally competitive research teams we wish to recruit three scientists with experience in basic experimental medical science.This recruitment is part of a strategic initiative to develop creative research environments for translational medical research with close interactions between basic and clinically oriented scientists.The positions are guaranteed for five years.The positions will be placed in clinically oriented research environments and they will be affiliated to a clinical department.The candidates are expected to run an independent research project and build her or his own research group, to supervise graduate students and post-docs, to interact synergistically with especially clinically oriented research groups, and to take active part in the development of the research environment.Laboratory space, start-up funds and initial support for graduate students/postdocs are provided.Umeå University has a strong focus on understanding molecular mechanisms of disease.We integrate molecular, cellular, and developmental biology with transgenic approaches and functional genomics.Umeå University provides state-of-the art communal core service facilities, including a modern animal facility, a Transgenic Mouse Service Facility, a Gene Array Facility, Cell Sorting, Bio Optics and an advanced proteomics platform.Qualifications PhD or equivalent academic degree (not older than 15 years) within a relevant field of experimental medical research.The main criteria for evaluation will be scientific excellence, capacity to attract and build an independent research team, capacity to interact with clinical researchers, and capacity to attract own external funding.Interpersonal skills will also be evaluated.The excellence will be evaluated in relation to the career phase of the applicant.Selection process The selection will be in two stages.Initially, on the 28th of October 2010 at the latest a preproposal should be submitted.For the preproposal, applicants should submit a short description (3 pages) of current and planned research, a CV, a list of the 10 most important publications, and names and addresses (including e-mail addresses) of three scientists that can provide references.Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.A smaller group of applicants will thereafter be selected and invited to submit a detailed and complete application and invited to an interview.
