Three four-year positions as Group leaders in neurometabolism research at Umeå University, Sweden, see complete ad: www.jobb.umu.se We seek three scientists who will work independently and in collaboration to advance the understanding of neurodegenerative disorders at the cellular and functional level based on results from metabolomics.Candidates must have a Ph.D.and/or M.D.degree and are expected to have a record of internationally recognized research accomplishments of high quality in neurodegenerative research or related areas.The candidates should have at least two years of postdoctoral experience.There will be one position each in the fields of Alzheimer?s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson?s disease (PD).The goals of the research is to use tools based on metabolomics and related fields to advance knowledge of the above mentioned diseases with regard to - Diagnosis: the ability to correctly diagnose neurodegenerative disorders in the early phase of disease - Progression: identification of mechanisms contributing to disease variation (difference in phenotype and severity) of specific neurodegenerative disorders - Basic disease mechanisms: knowledge of mechanisms causing/contributing to cellular dysfunction/death - Therapy: provide new ideas on treatment based on results from the areas above Research groups at Umeå university have a long-established interest and active research in AD, ALS and PD.Unique materials (blood, CSF, saliva, CNS tissues) are collected in large biobanks, including prospectively collected samples from different disease stages, and clinical information.Applicants should submit a CV and bibliography, a short description of current and planned research, and names and addresses (including e-mail addresses) of three scientists that can provide references.Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.The positions are available from January 1, 2011.Specify in your application whether your main interest lies within one specific diagnosis, or if your interest includes all diagnoses.Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.
