LKAB’s open pit mining operations are in Svappavaara, 45km south-east of Kiruna. The Svappavaara Mine Planning Section is responsible for expanding, consolidating and utilizing the iron-ore reserves of the Svappavaara field, today LKAB’s most expansive area. We are a multi-disciplinary team of mine geologists, rock mechanics, mine planners and surveyors. We are small, friendly team with highly engaged and knowledgeable staff, all working towards the goal of a safe and sustainable mining operation.
About the position
We are searching for an innovative, knowledgeable and responsible Group Manager within the Mine Planning Section (Geology group)
The Geology group is a part of the Mine Planning Section at Svappavaara. The group is responsible for mine geology and rock mechanics in the Leveäniemi open-pit iron-ore mine. More specifically, the group’s tasks include pit-mapping, geological modelling, production block model, data management, slope stability inspections, rock-mechanical models, and infill diamond drilling management.
The role of the Group Manger will be to oversee the 4-5 group personnel, ensuring tasks are undertaken in a safe and coherent manner. Responsibility for staff and the budget, as well as the development of working routines and methods is a major part of the role. Due to the relatively small group size, it is also expected that the group manager will be able to support staff with the everyday technical tasks where appropriate, as well as train and mentor on a technical level.
Your qualifications
We are searching for someone who is well-organised, has good analytical skills and who is able to communicate and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
You should be degree educated (BSc, MSc) within geology, earth sciences or geotechnical engineering. At least 5 years previous experience working within mining/exploration geology is preferred, ideally having worked within open-pit mining operations and/or development projects.
Good technical knowledge of 3D geological/geotechnical modelling, block modelling, pit-mapping, grade-control and management of diamond drilling projects is preferred. Previous staff management and/or project management experience is advantageous.
Knowledge of mining software such as Leapfrog Geo, Vulcan and geological databases as well as good general knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.
Experience of technical report writing to PERC (or other CIRISCO) standard is also advantageous.
