The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. Every year, the Institute hosts over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to carry out world-class research in condensed matter physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. The Projects and Techniques Division, which is responsible for the development of the ILL's scientific instruments and for technical support, currently has the following vacancy:
Head of Network and Data Services Group
Duties:
The Network and Data Services Group (5 to 10 team members) is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the ILL network, including data storage (including experimental data), general infrastructure services (email, authentication, internet access, etc.) and network user support. As Head of this Group, your main duties will include:
- Managing the team;
- Handling the Group's budget, prioritizing projects and monitoring expenditure;
- Designing upgrades for ILL's IT infrastructure in collaboration with the Head of the IT Service;
- Participating in a DevOps transition (culture and tools);
- Creating, leading and monitoring the execution of various local and European projects;
- Performing emergency technical maintenance;
- Acting as a member of the EPN campus IT technical team.
To take up the position of Head of the NDS Group, you must have an expert knowledge of IT architecture and be able to familiarise yourself rapidly with ILL's IT infrastructure. You must therefore be able to learn autonomously.
Qualifications and experience:
- Master's degree in Computer Science or relevant IT diploma;
- Very high level of technical expertise in Linux systems (mainly "Debian");
- Very high level of technical expertise in system and network architectures;
- At least 10 years' experience of working with complex system, network and storage architectures;
- Team leadership and/or project management experience;
- Proven ability to be thorough, proactive and open to new collaborations, and to develop innovative solutions.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
