The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source Eric in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Head of Target Division and Target Sub-Project Manager.
Description of directorate/division
The ESS Target Division is part of the ESS Machine Directorate with the responsibility to design, develop, procure, install, and commission the target station, whose primary function is to convert the energetic proton beam coming from the ESS accelerator to neutron beams that are utilized for experiments. Key features of the target station are the target itself, the neutron moderator and reflector system, the neutron beam extraction system, the monolith structure surrounding the target, the cooling systems that remove heat from the target and nearby structures, and the active cells used to store and prepare for shipment the highly activated components removed from service.
The Target Division currently consists of approximately 25 employees plus another 25 contracted staff. The 160M€ Target Sub-Project is currently 20% complete, with almost all systems now in the final design phase and some now currently being installed. In-kind partners throughout Europe deliver approximately half of the Target Sub-Project scope.
Description of main responsibilities
The Head of Target Division and Target Sub-Project Manager plans and executes the technical and project work within the division.
Main responsibilities are:
• Lead and coordinate the work within Target Division.
• Serve as a member of the ESS Technical Board (ETB) and of the Machine Management Team (MMT).
• Manage the Target Station Project, including planning and executing work to meet the project’s technical performance goals on time and within budget.
• Maintain the project plan and address issues negatively impacting earned value.
• Build and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with in-kind partners supporting the Target project.
• Maintain productive relationships with other sub-projects (Accelerator, Integrated Control Systems, Neutron Scattering Systems, and Conventional Facilities)
• Identify and manage project risks.
• Inspire Target Division staff to deliver high quality work in a timely manner.
• Enhancing professional growth of Target staff.
• Avert and resolve conflicts or disagreements between staff.
• Promote workforce diversity and excellence.
Qualifications
• Master degree in physics or engineering (PhD preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated success in leading and engaging people, including cross-organizationally.
• Demonstrated success in strategic and project planning.
• Commitment to scientific excellence.
• Skilled at building productive and sustainable internal and external collaborations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
• Experience delegating authority, negotiating and building consensus, effective teaming, conflict resolution, and motivating continuous improvement.
• A proven track record of attracting, evaluating, mentoring, and developing talented people.
• More than 5 years of work experience in a nuclear or accelerator environment is preferred.
• Experience working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
