The European Spallation Source ERIC, ESS, is hiring motivated and inspired people to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe. ESS is based in the university city Lund, Sweden and is a partnership of 13 European countries.
ESS is looking for a Head of the Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Unit.
For ESS the protection of the environment, optimum health and safety conditions as well as the quality of its management processes are of highest priority. The ESH&Q unit has the responsibility of developing and implementing the organization’s ambitious policy as well as assure full compliance with regulations and assists in licensing processes.
About the team
The tasks and responsibilities of the ESH&Q unit include but are not limited to:
• Interpret and implement national and international regulations, standards and best practices,
• performe risk assessment, risk mitigation and risk control management,
• assure environmental monitoring and radiation protection incl. radioactive waste handling
• develop and maintain an integrated management system,
• provide expert support in quality assurance and quality control,
• conduct licensing processes, in particular with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM);
About the role
As the successful candidate and future Head of the Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Unit you will:
• Manage and lead the ESH&Q unit with close to 40 highly skilled individuals including the ESH&Q management team and report directly to the Director General,
• Assume responsibility for physical security and information security; crisis management and emergency response coordination,
• You will work with ESS’s external Environmental, Safety, and Health Advisory Committee (ESHAC) to identify opportunities to improve programs and establish priorities for upcoming activities.
About you
We believe that you:
• have an advanced degree in Science or Engineering,
• possess at least 10 years’ experience in directing ESH&Q programs preferentially at a major R&D facility or project, either in the public or private sector,
• are familiar with a diverse hazard inventory similar to ESS, for example at a high-power accelerator laboratory or a neutron science facility would be an advantage,
• have experience in managing large teams,
• can demonstrate leadership preferentially in an international environment,
• possess excellent networking and interpersonal skill as well as demonstrated financial awareness and ability to add value through creative solutions to complex problems.
• possess excellent communication and presentation skills,
• perfectly master English in oral and written form.
