Industrial PhD

Arbetsbeskrivning

AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of prescription medicines for some of the world?s most serious diseases. But we're more than one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. At AstraZeneca, we're proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. Here, employees are empowered to express diverse perspectives - and are made to feel valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.

We are looking for one PhD-student who will join forces with a total of 12 ambitious and enthusiastic PhD students as well as a senior scientist/program manager, in an interdisciplinary Marie Curie Initial Training Network at the forefront of super-resolution microscopy beyond state-of-the-art. The aim is to take nonlinear optical microscopy to the nano-scale by developing novel detection methods for label-free, three-dimensional (3D) dynamic imaging of macromolecular arrangements and metallic nanostructures and to demonstrate its application for the monitoring of protein misfolding and drug-response in living cells, energy harvest processes in fuel cells, as well as plasmonic enhancement effects in nanoscopic sensors and emitters. We have brought together 6 EU full partners (Sweden, France, UK, Switzerland, Germany) and 8 associated partners, including from the laser, microscope and pharmacology industry, covering expertise from front-line technology developers of optical microscopy instrumentation to experienced users within the life-, chemical-, pharmaceutical- and material sciences. It forms an exceptionally attractive training environment for ambitious researchers, joint workshops and courses, secondments in the photonics/pharmacology industry, international collaboration with academic and industrial partners, a mentorship program and support in career development. After graduation, a vast variety of career paths are opened up: in the photonics research and industry, at bioimaging centers, in the pharma industry, entrepreneurial development of plasmonic nano-devises and fuel cells for sustainable energy harvest.

The arena

Within the iPS/stem cell group within Discovery Sciences, AstraZeneca, Mölndal, we focus on developing physiologically relevant cellular models and assays to improve the quality of in vitro drug discovery. In the Advanced Cell Lab, we offer state-of-the-art lab facilities and a vibrant environment with ongoing collaborations between academic groups and AstraZeneca scientists. The position is an industrial PhD and the student will be registered at Molecular Microscopy, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden and co-supervised by Associate Professor Annika Enejder.
