Industrial PhD position for the next generation of autonomous driving

Arbetsbeskrivning

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.Join our dynamic and ambitious team at Scania R&D as we work to revolutionize the transportation industry with our cutting-edge autonomous transport solutions (ATS). Our culture is centered on delivering added value to our customers through innovative concept creation and real-world experimentation. We strive to maintain a start-up vibe while enjoying the stability of a large organization.

Are you ready to turn your ideas into reality? Apply now and be part of a team that is shaping the future of transportation.

Background

High-definition maps (HD maps) are critical to the success of autonomous driving systems, as they enhance a vehicle's perception of its environment, which is essential for accurate localization, planning, and prediction. However, the accuracy of HD maps begins to degrade from the moment data is collected, which presents a significant challenge.

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to tackle this problem head-on and make a significant contribution to the development of this technology. You will work alongside other talented and motivated individuals who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the field of autonomous driving.

Join us and be at the forefront of the next generation of autonomous driving systems! You will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects, collaborate with top talent in the field, and make a real impact on the world around us. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a team that is changing the future of transportation.

Life-long Mapping and Localization

Lifelong mapping system that can facilitate the long-term deployment of autonomous vehicles in changing environments. This is a crucial area of research, and your contributions will be integral to the success of this technology.

As part of this project, you will have the opportunity to investigate innovative approaches that can identify changes in the information contained in HD maps based on the vehicle's sensory observations. This will involve utilizing machine learning techniques, statistical methods, and other cutting-edge technologies to match and associate data collected through the vehicle's sensors with a-priori map information.

You will be working with a team of experts from Autonomous Transport Solutions (ATS) Research at Scania and the division for Robotics, Perception, and Learning (RPL) at KTH-Royal Institute of Technology. Under the guidance of Prof. Patric Jensfelt (academic supervisor) and Rohin Mohanadas (industrial supervisor), you will pursue multi-disciplinary research in areas such as statistical filtering, deep learning, graph theory, optimization, and sensing technologies.

Your profile

Are you a talented and driven individual with a passion for technology and innovation? Do you want to take your skills to the next level and work on cutting-edge research that can make a real difference in the world? If so, we want to hear from you!

We are seeking applicants with a Master of Engineering degree (or equivalent) in applied mathematics, computer science, machine learning, robotics, engineering physics, electrical engineering or a related technical science or engineering subject.

We value mathematical skills in optimization and stochastic processes, as well as excellent programming skills. We are looking for candidates who are self-motivated, engaged, and able to communicate in a pedagogic way to expert and non-expert audiences. Strong analytical skills, excellent organization, and the ability to autonomously plan and execute tasks are also essential.

Fluency in English, both in writing and speech, is a must. If you are passionate about your work, eager to learn, and excited about the possibility of making a difference in the world of technology, we encourage you to apply. Join our team and be part of a community of like-minded individuals working towards a brighter future!

Requirements

• Solid theoretical knowledge of object tracking, multi-sensor odometry, localization, mapping, SLAM, sensor fusion, signal processing, or machine learning. You should be comfortable applying these concepts to solve complex robotics problems.
• Experience with deep learning frameworks and architectures. We are looking for candidates who have hands-on experience with popular deep learning frameworks, and who are comfortable implementing complex neural network models.
• Strong coding skills and the ability to demonstrate theoretical results through running software on robotic platforms. You should be passionate about coding and have experience writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code. Additionally, you should be comfortable working with robotic platforms and be able to demonstrate the performance of your algorithms in real-world settings.

Extra meritorious if you have experience in one or more of the following:

• Experience developing within a Linux-based development environment. We are looking for candidates who are comfortable working within Linux-based operating systems.
• Solid Python, C++, ROS, and system building skills. You should be comfortable with these programming languages and have experience building complex robotic systems.
• Knowledge and experience within other programming languages and/or MATLAB/Simulink along with a keen interest in software development. We value candidates who have a diverse set of programming skills and are eager to learn new languages and tools as needed.
• A proven interest in interdisciplinary research and a record of initiative. We are looking for candidates who have a passion for interdisciplinary research and who have demonstrated initiative in their previous work.
