Arbetsbeskrivning
GKN Aerospace is a world leading global first tier supplier of airframe and engine structures, components, assemblies and transparencies to a wide range of aircraft and engine prime contractors and other first tier suppliers. It operates in three main product areas: aero structures, engine components/sub-systems and special products.
Engineering Methods is a department within Research Center Trollhättan. The Engineering Methods department is responsible for design and analysis methods that shape our future aero engine modules. We work mainly in technology projects where we apply methods to design new products and develop new Engineering Methods in the fields Aerothermodynamics and Solid Mechanics including Material testing and development of material properties for new materials. Today we are 25 employees of which a significant number have a PhD degree.
Position
The department of Engineering Methods has an open position for an industrial PhD student in the field of Mechanical Engineering coupled to Value Driven Design. The industrial PhD student is organized within the Engineering Methods with the task to undertake research studies within a Vinnova project called "Design for Performance - advanced power plant architecture and integration". As a GKN employee, the research is done within the company, whereas the research studies are conducted at Production and Product Development at Chalmers University. The research is a part of the Value Driven Development cluster, and there progress will be reported to a steering group with both Chalmers and GKN representatives.
Main responsibilities
As an industrial PhD student the overall objective is to be a key part in developing our Engine Systems engineering capability. The "Design for Performance" project is a 4 year research project where the PhD student will work closely together with a PhD colleague at Chalmers who will focus in the engine thermodynamic performance. Through undertaking research studies the focus is to understand and perform design studies of alternative engine configurations in early phases from a mechanical engineering point of view, developing and adopting the necessary engineering methods and tools and ultimately improving our ability to trade engine performance with engine designs.
Qualifications
You are an Engineer with a MSc degree (or equivalent) with relevant education in mechanical engineering with emphasis modeling, simulation and structural mechanics preferably with some year?s industrial experience in design and analysis
You have a good ability to communicate and work together with our research partners
You have capabilities to create enthusiasm and motivation, to deliver results and create relationships
You have a strong drive to develop, validate, present and implement new methods, tools and the theories on which they are based
You have good social skills, the ability to create effective networks and can take on a technical responsibility role in the future
You are proficient in English, which the GKN Group language
Knowledge of Swedish is considered favorable
