Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

Background
We are looking for a PhD student, in the area of Smart and Sustainable Production to be part of our exciting journey. We stand in front of a big change both when it comes to the way of working in the Production and Logistics as well as the IT solutions that will support our business together with all that digitalization brings. The PhD position will be placed at Scania Global Industrial Development. A significant part of the work will be performed in close collaboration with Scania Industrial Maintenance.

Scania Global Industrial Development is responsible for strengthening and developing Scania's joint expertise in production technology, quality and industrial IT. Scania Industrial Maintenance (Scania IM) is a company for technical support in production and part of Scania CV AB. Scania IM’s has a broad offer within industrial projects and is responsible for production and premises maintenance.

Position
This position is targeting research in the area of Sustainability and Smart Production with a strong focus on Maintenance. The goal of the research is to understand the potential of improving production towards sustainable targets by means of a data driven approach. Focus areas of the research will be within data collection strategies in production, data modelling and the development of data analytics in order to exploit the sustainability potential in production whilst maintaining the same profitability. Typical sustainability targets are the optimization of energy usage and cooling fluid of production equipment as well as the minimization of waste end emissions in general. For the application and the industrialization of the findings, it is necessary to consider the implications of different scenarios, such as brownfield scenarios (upgrading existing production equipment) and greenfield scenarios (installing new production equipment with build-in connectivity), in the research.

As an industrial PhD student, you are fully employed by Scania and you will be assigned an industrial supervisor within Scania IM. Furthermore, you will be assigned an academic supervisor at the Royal Institute of Technology KTH. Normally, an Industrial PhD study takes 5 years to conclude.   

Your profile
You have a M.Sc. with a relevant focus or the corresponding qualifications required to be accepted as a PhD student at KTH. Ideally, you have been working for a few years within the field, and would like to develop your skills in Smart Production, Sustainability and Maintenance. Furthermore, you would like to improve your analytic skills and your capability to tackle complex problems with a systematic approach. You have a passion for research and the application of research results in an industrial environment. As a person you are persistent, creative, independent and a good team player. You should also have good communication skills and a very strong ability to express yourself well in English, in both speech and writing.
