The Scientific Projects Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Installation and Construction Group Leader.

Description of division

The Scientific Projects Division (SPD) is responsible for building the neutron scattering instruments at ESS as part of the Science Directorate and the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project.  It develops processes and operates a support organization for the instrument project teams.  SPD also provides the primary interface with the Conventional Facilities Division for the Science Directorate.

Description of main responsibilities

The Installation & Construction Group Leader will plan, organize and lead Instrument Construction (infrastructure) and Installation (technical component) activities.  As the schedule warrants, this person will build a small team of construction managers to assist in this work.  This person will become the lead interface to Conventional Facilities while the buildings are under construction, both verifying that requirements are met and interfacing SPD activities while the prime contractor has control of the site.


• Contract and organize the construction work force for Instrument Construction
• Develop the installation plan for each instrument work package, in close coordination with each instrument team.
• Develop an integrated installation plan for all instrument work packages, with the Chief Instrument Project Engineer in order to meet NSS goals.
• Execute the construction and installation work for instrument work packages as delegated by the instrument teams.
• Manage the effort of the construction work force to ensure all instrument work packages construction work keeps within budget and schedule.
• Coordinate efforts of the instrument work packages within the Experiment Halls with the efforts of each other, other projects and operations in the same areas.
• Provides status and progress reports (EVM) to the instrument teams as required.
• Set and enforce, in coordination with ES&H, the work and safety rules in the construction areas of the Science Directorate. Ensure that construction and installation work is performed safely. 

Additionally, this person will be responsible for working with other members of the Science Directorate and ESS's partners in order to meet the goals of the NSS Project.  This will include working to support activities via in-kind agreements and supporting engineering staff in finding appropriate companies and partners that can execute our work.  They will also be required to make presentations to explain, describe and gain support for planned processes with technical personnel, including scientists and engineers, who are unfamiliar with construction processes. 

Qualifications


• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering or Construction Management.  Prefer:  Master's degree
• 10 years experience in managing and organizing construction work, preferably in the Swedish and/or European work environment.  Experienced is required with standard construction practices, managing large construction projects, bidding and running construction work force and materials contracts, preferably in Sweden and/or Europe.
• Experience in planning construction and installation is required. 
• Experience in supporting scientific or technical installations and building the supporting infrastructure would be a plus.  Experience supporting the construction and installation of neutron scattering instruments would be highly preferred; x-ray instrumentation experience comes a close second.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite
