The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for 4 Instrument Project Engineers.
Description of directorate/division
Instrument division - The mission of the Instrument Division is to design, construct and operate the neutron instruments of the ESS. In each instrument class, a number of conceptual instrument designs are performed, some in-house and some using resources provided as in-kind contributions from ESS partner countries. Instrument project engineers are working closely with the instrument scientists to fulfill the mission of the Division.
ESS centralized Integration and Engineering Support Division is part of the ESS Machine Directorate. The I&ES Division is:
• A service provider of engineers and designers for the ESS projects for in-house design activities as well as activities performed by collaborating organizations.
• Responsible for development and maintenance of the design processes including accommodation and maintenance of design systems and tools.
• Responsible for the management of the Product Data Management System, the integrated CAD-model at ESS, the ESS Plant Layout (EPL) and classification and standardization of e.g. components and materials.
Description of main responsibilities
The Instrument Project Engineers (Instrument Lead Engineers) are co-leaders of an instrument project (work package) with an Instrument Project Leader (instrument scientist). The engineer provides with technical project leadership, including management and integration of engineering effort. Working with the Instrument Scientist of a particular beam line, you perform engineering design work based on the scientific specifications. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the 3D CAD model of the instrument, working with the technical groups for integration and coordinating all engineering efforts related to the instrument. You will also be responsible for fabrication and assembly of all manufactured components of a beam line. Additionally, you will work with other staff to perform validation, verification and testing.
This will include:
• Design engineering using the 3D CAD-tool Catia V6.
• Engineering activities from requirements to installations.
• Analyzing engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and FEA packages.
• Writing technical specifications, performing market surveys and price enquiries o find appropriate suppliers.
• Supervision of technical staff and designers for prototyping, series production and follow-up of supply contracts.
Qualifications
• Bachelor in mechanical engineering or an equivalent combination of education and design experience.
• Experience in mechanical engineering of complex engineering problems, working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Experience in a 3D CAD software (Catia V6 preferred, others acceptable).
• Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting plus basic engineering principles, coded and standards required.
• Ability to analyze and solve basic mechanical engineering problems using strength of materials and materials selection principles.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
