Instrument Scientist in the RIXS team

Arbetsbeskrivning

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

The Science division is divided into a number of supporting groups and three scientifically oriented groups, Imaging, Diffraction and Scattering, and Spectroscopy.

These groups are further divided into teams based on beamline or scientific technique. Each team has the task to develop and support the instrumentation and scientific activity at the different beamlines. The aim is to maintain and develop state of the art equipment at stable operation. We are looking for a Instrument scientist to work as a part of the RIXS team .The RIXS team operates two beamlines at Max IV The Veritas beamline on the 3 GeV ring of MAX IV is dedicated to Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) covering many different applications. The beamline is currently in a mix of build-up and commissioning phase with plans to welcome the first RIXS users Q2 2021. The team is also responsible for the SPECIES RIXS branch on the 1.5 GeV ring.

Tasks
The work tasks of the Instrument scientist include, but are not limited to, the following: - Active participation in the commissioning of the beamline and end station in collaboration with the entire beamline team.
- Interaction with and support of expert users (early stages of operation) and regular users (at a later stage)
- Development of her/his own scientific and/or R&D project within the possibilities and capabilities of the beamline and collaboration with user groups.

The scientific project of the Instrument scientist can also make use of other beamlines at MAX IV or at other synchrotron radiation facilities.

The active collaboration with users to forward the Instrument scientist’s own  project as well as the projects of users is highly desirable as is the collaboration with the SPECIES beamline for RIXS on the 1.5 GeV ring of the MAX IV Laboratory.

Qualifications
- The successful candidate must hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.
- Documented experience of performing and interpreting spectroscopic experiments. Experience from RIXS in the soft X-ray region is of extra merit.
- Documented experience of working with ultrahigh vacuum instrumentation. Experience with developing sample environments for RIXS will be highly valued.
- Documented experience of synchrotron-based spectroscopy is considered an advantage.

-Some software development skills are required; especially experience with Sardana and Python is a merit.

The ability work in a team, good communication skills and good command of the English language are mandatory.
