The Machines Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Integrated Control Systems, Deputy Project Manager.

Description of directorate/division
The Integrated Control System (ICS) division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including Accelerator, Target. Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities.

Description of main responsibilities
The general role of the Deputy Project Manager is to assist and support the Project Manager in developing and delivering ICS. The Deputy Project Manager manages project activities, tasks, resources, budgets, milestones and deliverables in a tactical and operational sense whereas the Project Manager develops strategy and in other ways leads and directs the project in a strategic sense. The Deputy Project Manager is a close confidant and collaborator with the Project Manager, understudying and when required, including at short notice, temporarily fulfills all or any aspect of the role of Project Manager to ensure consistent and uninterrupted project performance.
Additionally, the Deputy Project Manager has the role of the Lead System Engineer for the ICS project. The responsibilities include execution, coordination and resource allocation for the system engineering tasks required by the project as well as the establishment and maintenance of good system engineering practices within the division.

Whereas the Project Manager oversees and defines the lines of communication and interfaces between ICS and other ESS projects in the ESS and reports to the director of the Machine Directorate, the Deputy Project Manager has a more concrete and implementation oriented focus on the cross-project interfaces and communication as well as an operational inward focus of progressing the project on a daily basis towards achieving agreed milestones, and to assure the integrity and quality of project work performed by the people of the project organization.

Qualifications
Engineer or physicist with several years of experience in the field of control systems and in the project management of control system design and construction. In addition, the candidate should have system engineering and product lifecycle management experience. The candidate should be familiar with control system frameworks. Experience with accelerator control systems as well as the EPICS control system framework is desired. The candidate should also have experience with product/system validation, verification and certification. The candidate must have several years of experience with software and hardware development, device integration, driver and device support development, embedded platforms development.


Experience of working in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

To be successful in this position you need leadership, presentation and motivation skills as well as a team-oriented demeanor. That includes the ability to set clearly defined objectives, plan activities and projects well in advance, manage time effectively, identify and organize resources needed to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against deadlines and milestones. You also need to have an analytical mindset to handle both numerical and verbal data and all other sources of information. It comes natural to you to probe for further information of a problem and demonstrate an understanding of how one issue may be a part of a much larger system. You can make prompt, clear decisions which may involve tough choices or considered risks and take responsibility for actions, projects and people.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
