Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Interbull Centre Director Background Interbull, a permanent sub-committee of the International Committee for Animal Recording, is a professional organisation offering international genetic evaluations and other services to its members in more than 40 countries worldwide. Interbull plans are realised at its operational unit, the Interbull Centre, based under contract at the Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics (DABG), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. The Interbull Centre is also appointed as an EU reference laboratory for bovine genetic evaluations. The Interbull Centre is presently conducting on its own, or in collaboration with its international partners, international genetic evaluations of dairy bulls for production, conformation, udder health, longevity, calving, and female fertility traits and additional functional traits are expected to be added to the service portfolio in the near future. In a special project international genetic evaluations are also developed for beef breeds. The current Interbull Centre Director will end his appointment by end of June 2008 and a replacement is therefore sought. Location Interbull Centre, Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden. Uppsala is situated 30 minutes north of Arlanda international airport and 45 minutes north of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. It is one of the major university cities in Sweden and offers an attractive mix of history, culture, modern hi-tech industry and a Nordic nature. Job description The primary responsibility of the holder of the position is to manage the organisation Interbull. This involves active participation in design, technical development, and delivery of Interbull services. Activity areas also include development of budgets and workplans for the Interbull Centre, coordination of research programmes, and maintaining communication systems and feedback channels with Interbull members and partners. The holder of the position will be the daily leader of the Interbull Centre group, which currently counts six full time employees, part-time support staff and two PhD students. The Interbull Centre Director reports to the head of DABG and to the Interbull Steering Committee. Qualifications Candidates should have a postgraduate degree (preferably Ph.D.) in animal breeding and genetics, or in a closely related field. A background in genetic evaluation and / or cattle genetics is essential. Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of good leadership and service development capabilities, communication and analytical skills, and a willingness to work collaboratively. The working language at the Interbull Centre is English, and comprehensive abilities in English are therefore a requirement.
