The Department of Soil & Environment is a leading center for soil science, nationally and internationally. We conduct research, environmental monitoring & assessment and higher education for sustainable soil management in agricultural, forest and urban environments. Outcomes are aligned to and contribute towards national and international strategies on food security, environmental protection and climate reporting as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The majority of the department’s activities is located in the Soil-Water-Environment center at the SLU Ultuna campus in Uppsala with one research group situated in Skara.
Duties:
As laboratory engineer you will be involved in several research projects that aim to evaluate soil quality with following duties:
• In collaboration with researchers, method development for e.g. assessment of soil quality, isothermal calorimetry, analysis of stable isotopes in gaseous samples as well as biodegradation of plastics
• Conduct and process data from soil biochemical analyses
• Maintenance of instruments and equipment
• Assist members of the group in field- and laboratory work
• Supervise the laboratory work of PhD and MSc students
• Order consumables
Qualifications:
We are looking for a person with a university degree in soil science, chemistry, environmental sciences or similar qualification. Practical experience in (bio)chemical analyses of environmental samples is a requirement. You are analytical meticulous, enjoying both routine work as well as maintaining instruments in the laboratory. Within the position, you will have great responsibility in the supervision of students at different educational levels in the laboratory. You should have very good experiences in data management using a PC. Following experiences are highly desirable: evaluating the microbial functional diversity profiles using MicroRespTM and/or isothermal calorimetry, analysis of stable isotopes in gaseous samples as well as skills in environmental, (bio)chemical analyses.
In addition, we will lay emphasis on personal characteristics, initiative and organizational ability as well as communication skills, flexibility and the ability to work in a team situated in multicultural environment.
Good knowledge of English, both written and oral, is a requirement, and it is an advantage if you have good knowledge of Swedish.
B driver’s license is a requirement.
