Arbetsbeskrivning
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
The Engineering Department (EN) pushes back the limits of technology so that physicists can carry out their research. Within the Mechanical & Material Engineering Group (MME) of the EN department, you will join the Forming & Welding Section (FW) that provides expertise and support in the field of metal forming and assembly technologies. This Section undertakes the fabrication of prototypes or small series using a wide range of in-house technologies, and realizes various development studies.
As a Mechanical/Materials Engineer in CERN's Engineering Department you'll have the opportunity to get involved in the whole lifecycle of mechanical fabrication of components for CERN's particle accelerators. Test yourself against a diverse range of technologies, serving as the link between physics and mechanical fabrication.
Join a highly qualified team of technicians and engineers in laser and electron beam processes. Take Part!
Functions
As a Laser Manufacturing Process Engineer in the FW Section, you will take the lead for laser processes and carry out hands-on work on Laser Welding, Laser Cutting and Selective Laser Melting (Additive Manufacturing).
You will:
- Perform autonomously a wide variety of welding and cutting operations on different state-of-the art laser equipment for the fabrication of highly technical prototypes and components of accelerators and its experimental facilities including research and development work;
- Perform autonomously Selective Laser Melting (SLM) operations for prototyping, small series and material development;
- Be responsible for laser activities: manage and coordinate the laser team, provide technical support to the team, take the responsibility for the outcome of the laser manufacturing processes, be in charge of the fabrication planning and set priorities;
- Be the main technical interface with CERN-wide users for laser related aspects in design and methods. Review engineering drawings and technical specifications. Provide input on design, materials selection and standards/construction codes;
- Set up and follow up a quality control system for the laser activity (welding procedures qualification, NDT, documenting work, indicators);
- Contribute to multidisciplinary projects, maintain close co-operation (and lead laser focused projects) with the other Engineering facilities CERN- wide
- Work in close collaboration with the electron beam welding team. On the longer term, you are willing to acquire the know-how to operate the electron beam welding machines in order to reinforce the service flexibility;
- Establish a network and maintain contacts with specialised laboratories / firms worldwide;
- Document work and activity through written technical reports and presentations.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering/material science or a related field.
International Welding Engineer diploma (IWE)
Experience:
- Extensive operational experience: -as Laser beam welding engineer within a manufacturing environment; -as a Selective Laser Melting engineer within a manufacturing environment;
- Demonstrated experience in other joining technologies such as electron beam welding, vacuum brazing, arc welding;
- Experience in the fabrication of cryogenic, radiofrequency, ultra-high vacuum or pressure equipment would be an asset;
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and application of joining techniques: welding: autonomously perform laser welding and cutting operations, knowledge of laser safety, deep knowledge of welding standards, design and construction codes for pressure vessel (European and ASME).
- Knowledge and application of additive-manufacturing techniques: autonomously perform selective Laser Melting operations, knowledge of safety aspects.
-Knowledge of metals and alloys: composition, structure, properties, heat treatments: in-depth knowledge of material science;
-Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO tolerancing (dimensional and geometrical product specification standards), ability to draft technical drawings.
-Manufacturing of mechanical parts: good knowledge and practical experience of high-precision mechanical engineering, design and fabrication of specific tooling.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations Being rigorous and producing quality results at first attempt Having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting Taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen Remaining objective, focussed and productive in a stressful environment; focusing on solutions rather than problems
- Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information Sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer Creating or participating in forums to exchange experience, comparing techniques and learn from others
- Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented
- Working in Teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals. Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships Seeking to help other team members when own work is done; supporting others
Language skills:
Spoken and written English and French: ability to understand and speak the languages in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentation.
