LLRF Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an LLRF Engineer.

Description of Accelerator Division?

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world´s most powerful neutron source.

Description of RF Section

The RF Section is responsible for generating, distributing and regulating 125 MW of pulsed RF power to 155 accelerating RF cavities of six different types. For an overview, see chapter 4 of the ESS Technical Design Report.

Description of the LLRF system

The low level RF (LLRF) system regulates the amplitude and phase of the fields of the accelerating cavities. It compensates for drifts in the cavity resonance frequency using stepper motor and piezo actuators and provides signals and functionality to the interlock system. The fast feedback algorithms (in baseband) are implemented in an FPGA and slower control functionality is implemented in an embedded computer, which is interfaced to the integrated control system.

Qualifications and main responsibilities

Your main responsibility will be for the LLRF systems at ESS. You will be key to bringing the LLRF expertise in-house to be able to continue with the design of LLRF and associated systems. As a senior LLRF Engineer you will review and consolidate the LLRF design and ensure that it can be implemented with the help of our partner labs.

Your main areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

• Plan, assist and supervise construction, installation and commissioning of LLRF systems at ESS.
• Serve as LLRF expert for RF Group.
• Provide direction and strategy for control algorithms and for setting objectives and targets for FPGA hardware and software developments.
• Oversee handover from Lund University and in-kind partner labs to ESS.
• Oversee and supervise existing and future contracts with external partners including universities and commercial contractors.
• Develop test and commissioning procedures of the LLRF systems before and after installation into the machine.
• Arrange and take part in reviews of the LLRF system and interfaced systems.
• Continue to optimize and improve LLRF systems during design, installation and operations.
• Provide support and training internally and for ESS partners.

To be successful in this position, you have a relevant MSc or PhD degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering or possibly in applied physics. To fulfill this senior role you will have several years’ relevant experience in LLRF, preferably from an accelerator background.

You have significant proven specific experience in:

• Digital LLRF design and operation.
• Analysis, design, commissioning and operation of RF systems consisting of both analogue and digital (baseband) components.
• System engineering.
• Automated control and signal processing.
• Test and measurement of RF systems.
• RF simulation.
• Contract and project management.

Experience of the following is an advantage.

• Operation and control of normal and super conducting accelerating cavities
• Familiarity with ATCA/microTCA or similar platforms
• Control of Stepper motor and piezo actuators
• Board design and fault finding
• EPICS, C/C++, Python FPGA, PLC programming
• Configuration management, version control, system and software reviews

In addition to your technical skills you:

• Have proven system analysis and problem solving skills
• Learn quickly, adopt well to change and challenges and have an innovative track record.
• Have excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
• Are fluent in written and spoken English
• Are able to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team within the group and with other groups
• Work in a systematic way, have good organizational and report writing skills
• Are able to supervise staff, contractors and suppliers
• Must be available for occasional travel
• It is expected that during commissioning and operation there may be a requirement for occasional shift working.

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
