Machine Vision Engineer (Computer Vision/CCD)
Are you passionate about computer vision? Come join our team where you get to develop innovative solutions and drive the evolution of visual intelligence!
We are building a state-of-the-art Gigafactory that will be one of the largest cell production facilities in Europe. We are now looking for a Machine Vision Engineer to join our Engineering team!
Volvo Cars is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world. Northvolt is a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, dedicated to delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery.
Together, we have formed a joint venture, NOVO Energy, to power the next generation of pure electric Volvo and Polestar cars.
Our Engineering team is coalition of specialists, engineers and technical project managers across a broad range of technical disciplines. Together they work toward the shared goal of scaling and industrializing the production of our lithium-ion battery technology that will help Volvo transform into a pure electric car manufacturer.
Our Engineering team collaborative, nimble, and always open to learn and grow. Their skills and experiences come from a variety of industries all over the world and span chemical, electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineering.
The team is currently focused on designing, planning and equipping a world class Gigafactory in time for start of production in 2026. This is an immense undertaking requiring the joint efforts and contributions of engineers working cross-functionally, with the ultimate goal of producing the world’s most sustainable lithium-ion batteries.
About the role
As a Machine Vision Engineer your focus will be on developing a novel solution to improve the existing Computer Vision pipelines and integration of camera SDKs provided by our suppliers to the existing software stack.
You will collaborate with a cross-functional group of experts from automation, control, materials flow, factory design, software engineering, and machine learning. Together, we will design and implement software systems that enable a highly automated production process. Additionally, you will collect complete data from both manufacturing and battery systems and develop innovative applications that optimize our processes and products.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- You will build and deploy a variety of tools for visualizing, debugging, and validating various layers in the vision pipeline.
- You will compose algorithms to process massive amounts of manufacturing data for online and offline processing.
- Develop, test, and deploy state of the art software systems for interacting with cameras, image processing pipelines, automation, data collection and more.
- Test, install, validate, and improve camera systems in the factory setting.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional group of experts across the company to make sure we build the right things together for the right reasons.
- Keep up with the state of the art in software, distributed systems, and engineering processes.
- Develop domain knowledge in related areas such as factory automation, battery manufacturing and connectivity.
- Develop scalable software that runs on hundreds of cameras in the future factory.
- Prototype and iterate on computer vision algorithms, camera integration solutions and inhouse tools.
Skills & requirements:
As a person you are self-going, solution oriented with a passion for solving complex problems with technology in a simple yet innovative way. You have the ability to work well with others in a multi-cultural team environment, as well as independently. We believe that you have:
- 5+ years of industry experience writing production-level C/C++, Python, or Go.
- Experience with real-time systems and generic programming are highly desirable.
- Experience with computer vision projects, OpenCV library.
- Ability to write, maintain and ship low level camera driver code (C++, Go)
- Strong knowledge in industrial optics, lighting, and image generation
- Strong mathematical fundamentals, including linear algebra, vector calculus, probability, and statistics.
- Basic Git knowledge: creating and merging branches, cherry-picking commits, examining the diff between two hashes. More advanced Git usage is a plus
Good to have:
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS)
- Experience with linescan cameras
- General understanding of battery production process
