Engineering Managers (EM) are people managers responsible for the overall accountability and development of their respective Product Teams. Their key responsibilities include fostering team members' career growth, actively recruiting, and organizing activities to boost retention.
They create an environment conducive to team and individual success, focusing on productivity and team thriving. In addition to being accountable for delivering results, they coach their engineers, work on the combined engineering roadmap, and strive to maximize efficiency, impact, outcomes, and collaboration.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Overall areas of responsibility and activities.
Team Management and Development: Lead team staffing, hiring, and capacity planning, including onboarding and offboarding processes.
Mentor team members for career development and leadership, encouraging cross-training for team resilience.
Address interpersonal conflicts, facilitate effective communication, and guide team members through changes.
Performance and Stakeholder Management:
Provide insights on the team's performance against its charter and how their work is perceived by management, business stakeholders, and customers.
Maintain awareness of the team's relationships with stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and alignment.
Technical Leadership and Strategy: Act as a technical partner to the Director, offering insights on mission fulfilment and business impact.
Ensure continuous investment in technology and quality to meet quality standards and requirements.
Collaborate with VP, Directors and other EMs to drive department-wide initiatives and identify areas for improvement.
Operational Excellence: Ensure the team possesses all necessary skills and resources to efficiently achieve their goals.
Manage on-call staffing for their Product Teams, ensuring operational readiness and responsiveness.
Actively work with employee engagement data to create motivated teams and drive a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with the organization's principles and values.
Qualifications and experience:
Communicates fluently and humbly with all types of different humans choosing effective methods based on context, audience and purpose.
Proven track record of hiring, developing and growing people. Committed to building diverse and inclusive teams; value empathetic and direct communication and foster environments that are at once collaborative, empowering, supportive, and challenging ones where people do their best work.
Engineering in relevant technical role, at least 10 years of experience.
Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders and helping them understand the trade-offs to different product and technical decisions.
Staying Up-to-Date on Security Threats: The manager should have a deep understanding of the evolving threat landscape and emerging vulnerabilities in software and infrastructure.
Security Architecture and Design: They'll provide guidance on secure coding practices, infrastructure security best practices (e.g., cloud security), and implement security tools and technologies.
Incident Response: The manager will lead the team in responding to security incidents, minimizing damage and preventing future occurrences.
Compliance: Ensuring the team adheres to relevant security regulations and standards.
Specific skills
Strong leadership skills to guide and motivate the engineering team effectively.
Proficiency in software development methodologies, programming languages, and frameworks relevant to the team's projects is essential.
Ability to oversee project timelines, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure deliverables are met within budget and schedule.
Capable of building and nurturing a cohesive engineering team, fostering a positive work environment, and providing mentorship to team members.
Excellent communication skills to effectively convey ideas, provide feedback, and collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving abilities to address technical challenges and make informed decisions that align with project goals.
Ability to think strategically about long-term engineering goals and align them with the organization's objectives.
Experience with Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban to facilitate iterative development and adaptability to changing requirements.
Skill in managing conflicts within the team and resolving issues professionally to maintain productivity and morale.
