The Strategic Research function is a central core function at SMT supporting all three divisions, Tube, Strip and Kanthal. We work with long-term strategic goals, to move the company in a materials evolution direction. Our materials are used in the most demanding environments where our products contribute to our customers productivity, process reliability, sustainability and cost efficiency.
At the department of Materials Design we now have an open position as Manager for Welding & Powder Research. This is a cross-functional unit which consists of seven highly skilled engineers, specialists and technicians as well as a welding lab. The team supports R&D projects and activities as well as technical production- and market support. The main focus is materials development, both related to welding/weldability as well as in the field of powder metallurgy. The unit also supports the organization with competence within welding and powder technology processes.
The location for this position is Sandviken, Sweden.
About the job
As Manager for Welding and Powder Research you are responsible for managing and developing the personnel as well as secure the prioritization and progress of projects and activities within the unit. You involve your team in planning and following up goals and assignments, both as a team and individually. You will also manage annual budget and financial targets, actively work with HSE&S and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
About you
We are looking for someone with experience from a role within R&D or a similar function and an education within Materials Science. You have acquired solid competence from a background in either welding or powder technology/metallurgy. You have good knowledge of efficient R&D processes and experience from managing R&D projects and project teams. A strategic mindset and ability to prioritize is a prerequisite as the position requires handling of both short- and long-term tasks from various stakeholders. As we operate on the global stage, your English skills must be good, both verbal and written, while knowledge of Swedish is advantageous.

You are attentive to the needs, input and competence of colleagues from different levels and positions which you effectively utilize to form decisions without protraction – even in face of uncertainties.
