Information about the division
The Division of GeoEngineering offers a position for a Marie Curie Fellow (Experienced Researcher) as part of EC/FP7 project CREEP (Creep of Geomaterials), with main focus on constitutive modelling of rate dependent behaviour of soft soils. The division is one of six divisions within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and consists of three complementary research groups: Geomechanics & Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrogeology & Rock Engineering and Risk Management of Land & Water Resources.
For more information about the CREEP IAPP project, see http://www.ntnu.edu/creep.
Major responsibilities
We are looking for a dynamic and talented individual for the position of Marie Curie Fellow (Experienced Researcher) to work on constitutive model development, verification and validation, with focus on modelling rate-dependent behaviour of soft natural soils. The holder of the post is supposed to play an active role in the EC/FP7 funded IAPP (Industry Academia Pathways and Partnerships) project CREEP (Creep of Geomaterials), focussing on research and knowledge exchange activities. However, as part of their post-doctoral training the applicant is also expected to contribute to the education at undergraduate or MSc level. This may involve lecturing, marking and/or running various forms of tutorials related to geotechnical education at Chalmers. The Fellow is expected to participate actively in the knowledge-exchange activities of the CREEP IAPP project, which include courses and workshops, as well as the organisation of the network's final conference at Chalmers. The Fellowship may include short secondments and/or visits to other network partners in Norway and the Netherlands. In addition to the research related to the CREEP project, the applicant is encouraged to develop his/her independent lines of research that fit to the overall strategy of the group, and he/she will receive mentoring for submitting subsequent funding applications. During the Fellowship the candidate has a possibility to participate in training provided by Chalmers on education, research and management and language courses in Swedish.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of one year fte, but if the personal circumstances of the fellow are such that he/she would like to work part-time, provided a permission by the Project Officer at REA is granted, it may be possible to convert the post to a 24 month 50% fte position. The salaries of Marie Curie Fellows have been set by the EC and consist of a monthly living allowance (salary) and a mobility allowance. Both are subject to tax, and from the salary component any compulsory social and pension charges are deducted. The mobility allowance is dependant on the Fellow's family status at the time of the appointment, as dictated by the EC contact for the CREEP IAPP project.
Qualifications
The post requires an undergraduate degree in Engineering, and a PhD degree (or at least 4 years of full time research experience) in computational mechanics or geotechnics or similar topic. Marie Curie Actions are special EC funded Research Training Actions which have special conditions for mobility & experience. To be eligible to be appointed, the newly recruited Fellow must simultaneously fulfil the following criteria at the time of recruitment by Chalmers in the frame of the CREEP IAPP project:
(a) Mobility
The researcher may be of any nationality. At the time of recruitment, however, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in Sweden, for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account
(b) Qualifications and research experience
To be eligible, the newly recruited researcher must be an Experienced Researcher. This means a researcher who, at the time of recruitment by Chalmers is already in possession of a doctoral degree, independently of the time taken to acquire it, or having at least 4 years of research experience (full-time equivalent) after obtaining the degree which formally allows him/her to embark on a doctorate in the country in which the degree/diploma was obtained or in Sweden.
The position requires
- Ability and genuine interest to engage with international level independent research.
- Expertise in constitutive modelling.
- Drive for developing independent research ideas, and willingness to apply for funding for research from industry and public bodies.
- Fluency in both spoken and written English, as necessary for teaching at Master's level and collaborations with network partners.
- Genuine interest in soft soil problems.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20130241 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically via Chalmers webpage.
Application deadline: October 22, 2013.
