Do you want to investigate the global effects of using metals as the future energy carrier and energy storage material?
Your role
Background
Today there is research ongoing at several universities concerning using metals as energy carriers. In principle it is about burning (oxidizing) metals, use the energy and then recycle the residual metal oxide using green energy. Thus, it would in principle be possible to create a carbon free energy cycle. See e.g. https://reporter.mcgill.ca/could-metal-particles-be-a-clean-fuel-of-the-future/ or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INqlPTHek7E.
Research in this field has started recently in Sweden at Combustion Physics at LTH and Saab Kockums is part of this effort. Saab Kockums' interest is related to the possibility of future use of metals in ship propulsion and for underwater applications.
Description
The Master Thesis work concerns life cycle analysis of using metal as energy carriers, i.e. the environmental and economic effects of e.g. using different metals (aluminium/iron/silicon but focussing on aluminium), mining and related processes, different metal forming processes including transports and logistics of metals (powder/wire/bulk) and oxides, metal oxide reduction processes including outlook of future possibilities, efficiency and estimate of energy losses in all stages of the process and safety aspects.
Your profile
Profile of this Master Thesis candidates would typically be 1-2 MSc students in Environmental Engineering connected to the Department of Environmental and Energy Systems Studies at LTH.
What you will be part of
Saab Kockums is a business area within the Saab Group and we develop, design, construct and maintain naval systems such as naval surface ships, submarines and autonomous systems.
Your workplace will be at the Strategy Department at Saab Kockums. We are responsible for Kockums' Research and Technologies and part of our mission is to follow and study the technology trends in the world. The department consists of a small team of dedicated specialists.
