Arbetsbeskrivning
Suitable background:
This thesis is suitable for 1-2 engineering student with educational background within the field of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and/or Chemistry. The thesis work requires good modelling and experimental skills. Understanding the physical, electrochemical, or mechanical aspect of the Li-ion battery is a merit.
Description of thesis work:
GOAL:
To investigate the battery cell pressure/volume change dependence on the state-of-charge, current level and temperature and develop a model for that.
BACKGROUND:
Prismatic and pouch cells are the commonly used battery type in the electric vehicles and the lithium intercalation in the electrodes can lead to volume expansion that has to be taken into consideration in the battery pack design. In the vehicle application the battery cells are normally fixed in a limited space therefore the tendency of the volume expansion will change the pressure applied on the battery which affects the battery performance as well as the lifetime.
In the previous work a prototype test rig has been manufactured to measure the battery pressure and volume change. A series of experiment is needed to have a better understanding of the behavior of the battery volume expansion in different scenarios. A model is to be developed based on the experimental results.
TASK:
Perform literature studies. Perform a series of experiment to measure the battery pressure and volume change when the battery is cycled under different current levels and temperatures. Develop a model for pressure and volume change of the cell under different current levels and temperatures based on the measurement result.
