Background:


Li-ion batteries are becoming more and more important for enabling the electrification of the transport sector as well as the development of stationary energy storages. Li-Ion batteries have an unfortunate property of having a voltage hysteresis. This gives rise to performance loss in terms of reduced power output and additional losses, apart from making it problematic for BMS systems. Accordingly, it is of utmost important to model this phenomenon as good as possible.


Suitable background:


This thesis is suitable for 1-2 engineering student with educational background within the field of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and/or Chemistry. The thesis work requires good mathematical modelling and experimental skills. Understanding the physical, electrochemical, or electrical aspect of the Li-ion battery is a merit.

Description of thesis work:


Measure the voltage hysteresis in a couple of cells in the Elkraftteknik battery laboratory at Chalmers. Study theory models and implement them. Compare the results, and update theory and measurements. Determine the losses in a cell to verify the loss impact.
