MASTER THESIS - CFD ON CARBON FREE COMBUSTION
In most part of the world, renewable energy sources are now cheaper than fossil and nuclear power generation. As they deliver energy intermittently, there is a growing demand for energy storage solutions. While batteries can address the challenge of daily fluctuations, they are prohibitively expensive for weekly to seasonal storage needs. Simply speaking, the longer the energy needs to be stored, the more important is the low cost for the storage container. Chemical bound energy in the form of liquefied electro-fuels can provide that. Hydrogen is the simplest of electro-fuels, but in itself it is not very storage friendly, as both liquefaction and compression are energy intensive, and/or requires expensive storage containers. Converting hydrogen to ammonia solves that. However, ammonia is not convenient as a fuel, as the fuel bound nitrogen forms both the polluting nitrogen oxides, NO and NO2, as well as N2O which is a strong greenhouse gas. Further, ammonia has a low flame speed which can make it hard to achieve stable combustion.
Ammonia can however be cracked back to hydrogen, either partly or fully. To which extent it needs to be cracked depends on the configuration of the burner. This thesis seeks to use the full potential of CFD to investigate how the fuel should be injected into the combustor of a gas turbine, and how much cracking is needed. Focus here is to find working concepts that later can be verified experimentally.

LET’S TALK ABOUT US
"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable future.
Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized.
A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
