Master thesis - CFD simulation of a heat pump centrifugal compressor

Master thesis - CFD simulation of a heat pump centrifugal compressor

Arbetsbeskrivning

High-temperature heat pump is an excellent solution for the district heating when the used electricity is green and there is a growing market in that area. Essentially, low global warming potential refrigerants (for example R1234ze(E) and R1234ze(Z)) are anticipated to be the refrigerants of choice for high temperature heat pump systems in industrial applications.

The project explores the implementation of refrigerant/s in numerical tool, the flow simulation and evaluation of the centrifugal compressor in CFD, and development of the process. Two different commercial CFD tools will be explored and compared, and an automatic/semi-automatic process should be developed from pre to post-processing starting from the blade geometry.

In the project the main goal is to perform CFD simulations of a centrifugal compressor which can handle a pressure ratio of 12 to 17. The compressor should be 2 stages centrifugal compressors. R1234ze(E) refrigerant should be taken as a reference refrigerant for the comparison.

Two master thesis students are expected to perform the thesis. The student should use two different CFD tools and compare the results and develop the process for the two CFD tools.

LET’S TALK ABOUT US

"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable future.

Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized.

A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
