MASTER THESIS – DESIGN OF A COMPONENT HCF TEST RIG WITH PIEZOELECTRIC EXCITATION
A Snapshot of Your Assignment
Vibration-induced high cycle fatigue (HCF) is a prominent damage mechanism of many components in a gas turbine engine. During the design phase of a component, experimentally obtained HCF material properties are used together with numerical tools to derive the weakest HCF location. However, in certain cases, difficulties in the prediction of component HCF life may exist, particularly for components featuring complex vibratory response shapes and less controllable manufacturing processes such as welding and brazing.
How You’ll Make an Impact
In order to overcome the difficulties in predicting the component HCF life , an experimental test rig will be designed , developed and constructed for quick and inexpensive HCF testing of full-scale components, e.g. blades and vanes that would allow for frequent testing at a relatively early stage in their design process. As part of the activities, you undertake you shall,
* Conduct a pre-study and literature review of rig concepts, including related Finite Element Analysis and Simulations available for validation.
* Under the mentorship of Industry experts within the field, design an excitation system set-up.
* Aid in optimization of measurement methodology by analyzing several Piezoelectric patch placements.
* Analyze results from the test and draw conclusions.
* Present your results to a global team within R&D Test.
With this assignment you will have the ability to train and improve your problem-solving capabilities by developing skills to transform the theory you will stumble upon during your coursework and pre-study into practice.
What You Bring
We believe this Master Thesis opportunity is suitable for students in their last year of studies within engineering working on a specialization or harnessing interest within structural dynamics, materials and /or electrical engineering. We hope you are someone with the following attributes:
* Passion for new technological advancements and engineering challenges.
* Willingness to learn and adopt to new information and knowledge.
* Self-driven with a problem-solving mindset to achieve completion of tasks.
