Master Thesis External Heat Transfer

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOU
Are you a master student planning to write your Master Grade during Autumn 2021?
We are now looking for a student to take on the assignment "Calculation of external heat transfer coefficients for gas turbine components".

Your profile
Student at MSc level with focus in mechanical engineering and flow physics
Have good knowledge about heat transfer, boundary layer theory and CFD.
Is structured and can communicate well.
Can find own ways and solutions to challenges and problems.

Your responsibilitites
To determine the metal temparature of a turbine component in a gas turbine, typically a vane or a blade, calculation of the external or gas side heat transfer coefficient (hereby noted as HTC) is necessary as input. Over the years different methods for calculating the external HTCs has been used; from flat plate Nusselt and Stanton correlations and boundary layer codes to state of the art CFD calculations.
Several factors influence the boundary layer around a turbine component airfoil and hence the external HTCs such as turbulence intensity, surface roughness, transition from laminar to turbulent flow, curvature, pressure distribution and Mach number distribution. This makes it a highly challenging task to calculate the proper HTC distribution.
Measurements of HTC at engine condition is extremely difficult, but data from test turbines are available. For example, there exists some freely available benchmark HTC data that could be used for comparison with numerical calculated HTC, which has been a common practice both in the industry and the academia.
The purpose with this thesis is to investigate, clarify and suggest optimal ways of working when it comes to prediction of the external heat transfer coefficient distribution around turbine component airfoils. The investigation tools for this task include a literature study and numerical calculations using in house codes and commercial CFD software. To evaluate the calculation part of the thesis, a comparison with available open HTC measurements and /or in-house metal temperature measurement should be made.

LET’S TALK ABOUT US
"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable future.
Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized.
A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
