Master thesis - Identification and definition of characteristics of additively manufactured surfaces
A Snapshot of Your Day
Additive manufacturing is an advanced manufacturing process that can create physical, three-dimensional objects directly from a computer design file. At Siemens Energy AB the additive manufacturing method PBF-LB (power bed fusion laser beam) is used to produce parts for gas turbines. One benefit of PBF-LB is the ability to produce parts with small features such as mini-channels. The size of the channels makes them sensitive to surface roughness.
Today, the knowledge of surface roughness in PBF-LB manufactured channels is limited. This causes challenges/issues/problems when performing flow and performance calculations of the printed parts. To take the next step to improve our flow calculation methods we need to learn more about the surface of the printed channels.
How You’ll Make an Impact
This thesis aims to characterize additively manufactured surfaces in a statistical way with electron and optical microscopy. Where the focus will be on how different parameters such as print angle, position on build plate, incidence angle, powder size etc. influence the surface roughness.
