Arbetsbeskrivning
The research institute Swerim provides applied research within mining engineering, process metallurgy and materials and manufacturing engineering, mainly for the mining, steel and metals industry. Swerim has 190 co-workers in two locations in Sweden - Luleå and Stockholm.
.
For many years, development of atomizers and agglomeration equipment has relied on suppliers instead of producers. This has led to a lack of knowledge about design and operation of atomizers (gas or water) and granulation/agglomeration (e.g. slag granulation) equipment. Thus, the know-how remains at the equipment supplier and not in the final user.
Swerim aims at supporting manufacturers in the design, development, and pilot testing of atomizing and granulation processes by providing experimental and numerical modeling tools to improve the knowledge and regain control of the process including development of nozzles and optimization of the operation window in order to increase yields and flexibility to produce new alloys as well as recycling waste materials.
Required qualifications
The student should be interested in Computational Fluid Dynamics (e.g. ANSYS Fluent), CAD drawing, Data Processing, Visualization of results and Programming. A good knowledge of flow mechanics (especially supersonic flows in convergent-divergent nozzles and multi-phase flows), turbulence and transport phenomena is advantageous.
Students are expected to benefit from familiarization with industrial research projects including discussions with researchers and technical staff as well as communication with international partners including visits to manufacturers.
The results are part of multi-national European projects and projects with local producers where Swerim provides access to a state-of-art computational cluster and experimental facilities such as (pilot atomizer and rotating disc).
