Master Thesis – Operational flexibility with gas turbines in hybrid

Master Thesis – Operational flexibility with gas turbines in hybrid

Arbetsbeskrivning

The energy market is undergoing a great transition, adding more and more renewables to the grid and increasing the fluctuation in power supply. The need for grid stabilization and flexibility will increase and gas turbines has a vital part to support the grid of the future.

In this master thesis you will investigate alternatives to increase the operational flexibility of gas turbines by technical solutions, such as water injection, and by hybrid solutions, combining gas turbines with batteries. By doing so, it will be possible to further boost capacity when the demand is high while still maintaining an acceptable life cycle cost for the engine.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOU

Your profile
* MSc student within mechanical engineering or similar
* Ability to work independently but are not afraid of asking questions to move forward in your work
* Enjoy solving problems and interested in the future energy landscape

The following areas are key areas for this master thesis, if you find them interesting this master thesis may be a perfect fit for you:
* Gas turbine thermodynamics
* Basic control
* Transient modelling & simulations

Your responsibilitites
* Model different solutions for increased operational flexibility for gas turbines and enhanced grid support
* Analyze and evaluate the different solutions
* Document method, results and conclusions in a report and present your results to the team

Your opportunities for personal growth

You will be working within the MGT (Medium Gas Turbines) Performance department. We are responsible for analysis and modelling of transient and steady-state performance of the MGT products. We are also the competence center for studies of new thermodynamic cycles. In this master thesis you will:
* Be mentored by experienced colleagues and experts within the area of transient modelling
* Get further knowledge and understanding of the energy landscape and how hybrid solutions may affect the energy transition
* Establish a network for future collaboration

LET’S TALK ABOUT US

"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable future.

Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized.

A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
