Master Thesis: Process modelling for AI-based optimisation of steel product

Master Thesis: Process modelling for AI-based optimisation of steel product

Arbetsbeskrivning

We want to be more! The research institute Swerim conducts needs-based industrial research and development concerning metals and their route from raw material to finished product. Swerim has 200 co-workers in two locations in Sweden - Luleå and Stockholm. Our vision is a fossil-free and circular industry.

.

Project Description: The research group of heating and metal working is looking for up to three master thesis students to work within an EU-project on digitalization of the steel production process. The steel production can be separated in different production steps like re-heating, hot-rolling, cold-rolling, heat treatment, or finishing operations. This project investigates how each production step influences the following process step and therewith the final product quality.

You will be a part of a bigger team of researchers and will work with one production process, like re-heating, rolling, quenching, or levelling and build or improve an existing model. You will focus on predicting and optimizing certain product properties and collaborate with others working on different processes.

In this thesis, the student is expected to:
* Setup a digital twin for a heating or metalworking application using nonlinear FEM, like LS-Dyna, MSC Marc or similar.
* Study how certain process parameter influence product quality.
* Collaborate with other researchers working on previously or following metalworking steps.
* Prepare results that can used by AI-based optimization tools to predict improved processes.
* Analyze results for process optimization.
* The data from your simulations will help to develop the next generation of online process optimization tools.

Qualifications: Master studies in mechanical engineering, material science, physics, or related area with focus on FEA modelling. Finite element skills in LS-Dyna, MSC Marc and some programming skills, for example in Matlab, python, C# or C++ will be considered as an advantage.

Project time
The project is intended for a master thesis (30hp). The start date is Januari 2025 or can be mutually decided through negotiations.

Further information
This project is intended to be performed at Swerim in Luleå or Kista. Swerim rewards the student with 50 000 SEK for an approved master thesis (30hp).
