Master Thesis project: Test data input to FE material model for SMC

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
AFRY is a European leader in engineering, design, and advisory services, with a global reach. We accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable society. We are more than 19,000 devoted experts in infrastructure, industry, energy and digitalization. We accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society for generations to come.
AFRY is among engineers rated as one of the most popular employers in Sweden.

Job Description
Background
Composite material produced using the SMC technique; Sheet Molding Compound, is difficult to represent in a FE model. The short fibers have varying orientations and density. Stiffness and failure values are therefore varying across the component.
Physical tests have been made in our client project, in order to find more information of fiber content, orientation and mechanical properties. The results now need to be analyzed and applied to FE analysis.
Objective
The objective of the thesis project is to analyze test data and study the possibility of relating thermography scans to fiber content, orientation and mechanical properties.
Possible methods to map the results to an FE model should be investigated and result in a recommended method.
Methods
Analyze test results from thermography scan, CT scan, GOM strain mapping and destructive testing. Use these test results to understand the orientation and density of fibers. Transfer results to FE-model and correlate to failure modes seen in test. Literature studies to find current industrial practice and existing methods for mapping material data to FE models.
Deliverables
A report containing:
Conclusions from thermography scan
Methodology for transferring test results to FE models
Guidelines for FE modelling and evaluation of material data mapping
Results of correlation of the suggested modelling technique

Qualifications
Master Programs: Applied Mechanics, Materials Engineering.
The project is suitable for 2 students.
