Description of thesis work
The crankshaft contains two critical radially machined areas, the end flanges, and the journals. The end flanges are used for rotational sealing. The crankshaft rotating in the engine block on the main journals and the connecting rod is connected to the crankshaft on the pin journals. The journals are critical for the functioning of the bearings.
Today repairs are allowed only on the flanges of the crankshaft. Remanufacturing is looking at alternate repair methods with potential higher quality that could allow us to also repair crank journals. This will allow us to avoid scrapping crankshafts with defects on crankshaft journals.
The work will be most beneficial for Volvo if it is done in collaboration with our remanufacturing department and mainly elaborating the method. The technology is available, and this thesis work will focus on Engineering aspects of the method to evaluate its use on remanufacturing the crankshaft journals.
The work in this thesis shall include both the technical aspects of the repair methods and the environmental and financial benefits of reusing the crankshaft.
