Simulation of Post-LOCA Heat Transfer in Nuclear Fuel Bundle
Master Theis proposal Westinghouse Electric
Introduction
Westinghouse expands within the BWR-fuel market in the USA by promoting the recently developed TRITON11TM nuclear fuel. A necessary step on the way is to update and further improve Westinghouse proprietary methods and methodologies for safety analysis concerning the Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA).
The LOCA-team at Westinghouse Västerås is now looking for a master student that is going to deploy the thermal hydraulic subchannel code COBRA-TF (CTF) for modeling the post-LOCA Heat Transfer in a nuclear fuel bundle. The result of this study will be used to support licensing of the LOCA methods and methodologies at the U.S.NRC (United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission).
Objectives
• In collaboration with code developers from NCSU (North Carolina State University) create a CTF model of the G-2 proprietary Westinghouse spray-cooling experiments.
• Validate CTF using the G-2 data.
Candidate Requirements
The successful candidate is interested in numerical simulations, is familiar with basics in thermal hydraulics and is keen on gaining new knowledge. Communicative level of Swedish is a merit.
Details
The thesis work is suitable for one student that starts in January 2024 and should be finished before summer 2024. The student should be able to reach the Westinghouse office in Västerås on daily basis.
