Master thesis – STL files to CAD format for topology optimized structures

Master thesis – STL files to CAD format for topology optimized structures

Arbetsbeskrivning

Additive manufacturing, AM, also commonly known as 3D printing, is an advanced manufacturing process. At Siemens Energy AB we use mainly an additive manufacturing method called PBF-LB that welds metal powder layers together with a laser to create three-dimensional objects. The additive manufacturing process can create geometries with complex features and small internal channels, that the conventional manufacturing methods find problematic and expensive to produce. The AM technology possibilities to manufacture complex geometries also enables new design methods such as topology optimization (TO). By using TO, it is possible not only to minimize the amount of needed material but also create a design that also fulfill other functional demands in the best possible way for the final component.

As for all new technologies there are challenges to overcome, and in the case of TO the converting of TO-geometry to CAD format is one. The converting to CAD format is important to be able to describe and handle the topology optimized geometry together with other geometries in the same system.

This thesis aims to develop a practical method to convert 3D geometries from STL-format to a CAD geometry in NX.

The student will be hired by Siemens Energy.

LET’S TALK ABOUT US

"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable future.

Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized.

A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.
