Master Thesis - Transient performance modelling of water injection into gas turbine

Join us on our journey #SiemensEnergy

Siemens Energy’s 91,000 employees around the world are passionately pursuing one common goal: to energize society with affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy systems.

Join our great team and put your energy to use.”

The MGT (Medium Gas Turbines) Performance department is responsible for analysis and modelling of transient and steady-state performance of the MGT products. We are also the competence center for studies of new thermodynamic cycles. We are now looking for a student to take on the assignment modelling of water injection in gas turbine to increase operation flexibility

The assignment:

The switch in the energy market towards more renewables forces the gas turbines to be more flexible to support a weaker grid and to adapt new fuels with less footprint. One way of boosting the gas turbine and momentously gain power to stabilize the grid is to inject water in the combustor chamber. The water injection may also in the future play an important role while striving towards hydrogen combustion. The task in this project is to model a combustor with water injection and to use that combustor in a transient gas turbine model.
* Model a combustor with possibility to add water
* Add the control of the water injection in the controller model
* Add the combustor model to the gas turbine model and simulate water injection
* Verify the model towards measured data
* Investigate how to improve the controller to rapidly increase load when water is injected by utilizing the model
* Summarize your conclusions in a report containing recommendations of new controller settings

Your Profile:
The project fits you who are a master thesis student within mechanical engineering or similar. You can work independently but are not afraid of asking question to get forward in your work. You are interested or have knowledge in the following areas:
* Gas turbine thermodynamics
* Basic control
* Transient modelling

Why should you be working at Siemens?

Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized. A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of around €29 billion in fiscal year 2019. In Sweden Siemens Energy has 2600 employees in 10 locations.

At Siemens we value diversity by inclusion and by cooperating with people with different mindset, background, experience, competence and personal traits – in all organisational levels.
