The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Design Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The ESS centralized design division is part of the ESS Machine Directorate. The design division is a service provider of engineers and designers for the ESS projects for, in-house design activities as well as activities performed by collaborating organisations.
The design division is responsible for development and maintenance of the design processes including accommodation and maintenance of design systems and tools. The division is also responsible for the management of the Product Data Management system, the integrated CAD-model at ESS, the ESS Plant Layout (EPL) and classification and standardisation of e.g. components and materials.
Description of main responsibilities
ESS is looking for a mechanical engineer who has the experience and expertise to take on the role as mechanical design engineer for Beam Diagnostics in the accelerator project.
The purpose is to oversee and perform engineering design and analysis on a wide variety of beam diagnostics systems, such as beam position monitors, wire scanners and secondary emission grids, optial beam imaging systems, slits, collimators, faraday cups and beam stops. In the longer term, the successful candidate may also be involved in the design of other mechanical systems related to accelerator systems, target systems and neutron scattering instruments, e.g. cryomodules, rf structures, vacuum systems, cooling systems, neutron target, reflector assemblies and experimental apparatus components etc.
Major duties:
• Responsibility for design oversight, testing and commissioning
• Develop, review and validate project design concepts
• Produce accurate and concise technical reports
• Analyze engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and FEA-packages
• Prepare presentations for and responds to recommendations from technical design reviews and advisory committees
• Participate in R&D and prototyping of technical equipment
• Proactively identify and ensure timely resolution of critical issues
• Review and assist the design of requirement documents
• Manage design procurement
• Provide technical and administrative support during installation, testing, commissioning, operations, troubleshooting and maintenance
• Model critical mechanical design in 3D CAD software
Qualifications
• Bachelor in mechanical engineering (Master preferred) or an equivalent combination of education and design experience
• A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in mechanical engineering of complex engineering problems
• Expertise working with Ultra High Vacuum compatible designs, and mecha-electronic in UHV environment is required for this position
• 5-10 years of expertise in a 3D CAD software
• Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting plus basic engineering principles, codes and standards are required
• Ability to analyse and solve basic mechanical engineering problems using strength of materials and materials selection principle
• Expertise of beam line components and beam line diagnostic is highly advantageous
• Expertise in thermo mechanical analysis, computational fluid dynamics and radiation hard materials, as well as experience with survey/alignment, metrology and clean rooms is preferred
• Working experience with Dassault Systèmes Catia V5 or V6 CAD package is preferred
