Description of directorate/division

ESS centralized Engineering and Integration Support Division is part of the ESS Machine Directorate.  The E&IS Division is:

• A service provider of engineers and designers for the ESS projects for in-house design activities as well as activities performed by collaborating organizations.
• Responsible for development and maintenance of the design processes including accommodation and maintenance of design systems and tools.
• Responsible for the management of the Product Data Management System, the integrated CAD-model at ESS, the ESS Plant Layout (EPL) and classification and standardization of e.g. components and materials.

Description of main responsibilities

The designer will be part of the ESS Design Group in "Engineering and Integration Support Division", the initial workload assigned from the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) and Scientific Activities Division (SAD) in various assignments. NSS support will be for the Bunker project, providing design and detailing support for the current Bunker designer. Mechanical Design Engineer working on the bunker project will be responsible for mechanical design of all bunker components. You will provide technical support in form of concept design, modeling and producing detailed drawings of the bunker. Further on, the position will also include mechanical design for other systems and projects within ESS, e.g. sample environment for neutron scattering systems. The bunker is a volume around the Target Monolith that needs to be filled with appropriate shielding material to reduce radiation to acceptable levels. The bunker will be constructed out of mixed materials, concrete and steel blocks, stacked in particular fashion, which minimizes radiation leakage and a number of lifts in order to access equipment beneath the bunker stack. Additionally, you will work across multi-disciplinary project members to ascertain validity of proposed solutions. This will include:

- Design engineering using the 3D CAD-tool Catia V6.
- Analyze engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and FEA packages.

Qualifications

- Bachelor in mechanical engineering or an equivalent combination of education and design experience.
- 2-5 years experience in mechanical engineering of complex engineering problems (special purpose industrial or scientific equipment), working in a multi-disciplinary
 environment.
- Experience in a 3D CAD software (Catia V6 preferred, others acceptable).
- Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting plus basic engineering principles, codes and standards required as well as manufacturability and assembly procedures.
- Ability to analyze and solve basic mechanical engineering problems using strength of materials and materials selection principles.
- Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
- Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
