The department Propulsion Energy System is responsible for development of major parts of hybrid and electric vehicle systems at Volvo Cars. The group Communication and Interfaces is responsible for delivering software and mechanical functionality and design, for both our inhouse and the supplier part of the design, for the on-board charger (OBC) and the DCDCs, wireless, EVI, Release Wire and much more in our electrified vehicles.
The on-board charger (OBC) is essential for electrified vehicles, it holds the functionality to charge the traction battery from the grid, and it is for sure of highest importance in a pure electric vehicle.
Both AC- and DC-charging are in current projects and wireless charging is already around the corner.
The EVI is the inlet for charging to commence and the release wire is the component as a fault release of the cable.
Description
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work alongside with suppliers in order to bring new solutions for our components to market utilizing the latest technology in a fast paced and international working environment. You will be lead the development for the EVI and release wire activities, while still working in an agile group with a Scrum Master and a Product Owner. The work includes contacts with other engineering departments, CAE teams and manufacturing engineering within our company as well as with external suppliers.
What you’ll do:
You will review and support the development of the design of HW components, such as EVI and Release wire. Moreover, you will balance and optimize the mechanical design against requirements as well as manage supplier contacts with regards to timing, technology and cost. Additional tasks are to optimize the packaging of components and participate at package meetings for resolution of mechanical conflicts and clearances issues.
Your key responsibilities will be:
• Support and lead concept work in assigned design area, i.e. manage, plan, and coordinate technical activities. Also, balance attributes, manufacturing and assembly feasibility with cost and time.
• Optimize packaging of components towards surrounding environment and defining requirements on surrounding systems / components in order to make the design work as intended.
• Mechanical Integration design work of the charging components such as sheet metal parts, aluminum extrusions, attachments and joining.
• Responsible to ensure that the technical documentation (3D Model, TCE, 3DPMI) is
available at the right level and at the right time.
